While the first round presidential elections is coming soon, the channel TF1 has just made an unexpected decision to say the least: to broadcast a cult French comedy instead of the full traditional election night of the first round.
A historic choice
Major event in French political life, the presidential election has caused a lot of ink to flow, and takes up a lot of television airtime. The first round of the presidential election is moreover, very often, the occasion for the various channels to offer lively debates, commenting on the first ballot.
Indeed, in addition to providing elements of analysis to explain or qualify the victory or defeat of the candidates in the election, these election evenings also allow television channels to achieve ratings very simply.
However, the TF1 group finally seems to have other plans for the evening of the first round of the presidential election, since the channel will broadcast a cult French comedy in the second part of the evening. This is the movie Visitors by Jean-Marie Poiré, released in 1993, with Christian Clavier and Jean Reno. The feature film will be broadcast from 9:20 p.m. A talk show will nevertheless be hosted between 8 p.m. and 9:20 p.m. to which the various spokespersons and supporters of the candidates will be invited.
The deputy director of the Information Department of the channel, Thierry Thuillier, explained this choice by the evolution of the expectations of the spectators faced with the abundance of political programs. In other words: while BFMTV, CNews, LCI and others will offer debates, TF1 will offer a “relaxation” moment to viewers who wish.
This decision elicited many reactions.both in the political class and among journalists and citizens, who strongly criticized the choice of TF1while abstention is likely to reach new records for this 2022 presidential election.
