Spider-Man: Tobey Maguire's movie censored for TV broadcast

In just a few decades, our society has evolved greatly. In the 7th art, the representation of women or even humor are no longer the same as at the beginning of the millennium. Therefore, it happens that the broadcasts of certain films are censored. This is the case of Spiderman of Sam Raimi, who had to separate from one of his lines of dialogue, considered homophobic.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man victim of censorship

Between 2002 and 2007 the three films of the trilogy were released Spiderman by Sam Raimi. A Peter Parker played by Tobey Maguire had to save New York, while juggling his personal problems and his secret identity. A trilogy very appreciated in the eyes of the fans who was able to anchor the spider-man in Hollywood cinema. Only, for its broadcast on the British channel ITV 2, the film Spiderman has been the victim of censorship. A line of dialogue was removed from the film, a sentence deemed homophobic.

In the original version, Peter Parker, better known as “The Human Spider” at this point in the film, undertakes a cage fight to test his abilities and earn his crust. As he prepares to face Bone Saw McGraw, a character played by Randy Savage, he dodges an assault from the wrestler before launching: “That’s a cute outfit. Did your husband give it to you?” Where “Your jersey is cute. Did your husband give it to you?” in the French version.

As you could discover in the video of the tweet found above, the version of Spider-Man broadcast by the ITV 2 channel truncated Parker’s line. Of “Your jersey is cute. Did your husband give it to you?“, only the first part has been preserved, the second has been censored. It’s no wonder that a television channel took the decision to truncate this remark, which some have called homophobic. In the current climate, it is not uncommon for films to be censored to better adapt to this new era.

How is his line homophobic? If anything the wrestler reaction is the homophobic part.
Peter could be 100% okay with two guys being together, but he knows that the wrestler likely isn’t, so he uses the wrestler insecurities against him, without disparaging gays in the process.

How is his reply homophobic? Rather, it is the reaction of the wrestler that is homophobic.
Peter might be totally fine with two men being together, but he knows the wrestler probably isn’t, so he uses the wrestler’s insecurities against him, without bashing gays in the process.

Despite everything, some Internet users have questioned this choice. It remains to be seen whether the film will also be censored when shown on other UK channels, or even internationally, in other versions. On your side, do you think this censorship was necessary?
