Some French series, as Lupine for example, have managed to do well abroad. For others however, the story is not the same, and netflixwho pays attention to the audience figures of a series, does not hesitate, then, to crack down.
Cancellations from Netflix
Cowboy Bebop, Castlevania, The Irregulars of Baker Street, Jupiter’s Legacy, Bonding, The Revolution … are so many recent series who will certainly never know a sequel, since Netflix has decided not to renew them for a new season. According to WiredNetflix would base its policy after reviewing a series’ viewership, based on its renewal cost and the proportional cost of production of the series in relation to the number of spectators.
And so that’s why some high caliber series, sometimes, are not renewed: the latter simply do not bring in enough. And the recently canceled French series we’re going to talk about is no exception.
The new French series canceled after one season
Funny is a French television series created by Fanny Herrero, broadcast since March 18, 2022 on Netflix. The story told to us follows young actors trying to find a place in the middle of the Parisian stand-up. After devoting herself to her family life, Aïssatou returns to the stage of the Funny Comedy Club to test her latest sketches in front of the public. She is supported by Nezir, struggling to make ends meet. Former stand-up star, Bling, meanwhile, is going through a bad patch. Faced with formidable competition, everyone wonders if they should throw in the towelor persevere.
As for the main actors, we find Mariama Gueye in the role of Aïssatou, Younes Boucif in the role of Nezir, Elsa Guedj in the role of Apollo and John Siuen in the role of Bling (Étienne).
After one season, however, Netflix decided to cancel the series. In question, as revealed by Younès Boucif on his Twitter account, “too few spectators” having watched the said series. Here’s the actor’s full tweet :
