If you are a fan of superheroes, you must know the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if you’re not into other media, you’re probably unfamiliar with some of Marvel’s greatest villains like the Infinites, abstract, interdimensional beings who pose one of the greatest threats the Avengers have faced.
A threat to the whole universe
If they have already had many adventures and saved the world and the universe countless times in the MCU, the Avengers have experienced even more numerous and impressive events in the comics. Marvel superheroes have been fighting to keep the peace for decades now (more or less depending on the character).
For this, they had to face dozens and dozens of enemies of all kinds, from the most obscure to the most massive and dangerous. In this second category, we can undoubtedly include the Infinites, a race of abstract, interdimensional beings from outside the Multiverse, whose objective is to rearrange the universe to better distribute the energy that circulates there. This is indeed what we discover in the comic seriess Avengers Infinity, published in 2000.
In it, the team of superheroes first discovers humanoid creatures of human size, the Servants, then immense creatures larger than planets, the Walkers, whose goal is precisely to destroy as many planets as possible. Discovering them, the Avengers are stunned by their gigantism, so much so that Thor exclaims that Galactus, a cosmic entity from the Marvel universe, “is dust in comparison”. And yet, Servitors and Walkers are only the minions of the real threat: the Infinites.
A threat never defeated
Infinites are abstract, they exist between dimensions and are poised to end billions of life in the universe. for the sole purpose of improving the stability of the multiverse. Yes, it’s still big bad guys who do evil, but think that evil is necessary for the long-term survival of the universe. And if we can say that the Avengers should be used to this kind of threat, this one turns out to be much greater than all those they have had to face so far. Even today, moreover, the Infinites can be considered one of the greatest dangers in the universe at Marvel.
And for good reason: unable to defeat them, the Avengers then call on Eternity, a cosmic entity that is also abstract and embodying time. Possessing no physical body, proving to be both omniscient and omnipotent, he is considered one of the most powerful beings in Marvel and, despite this, he is unable to overcome the Infinites. In the end, the latter are never eliminated, and it is through dialogue that the Avengers end up ending the conflict. It may seem very unoriginal, but they manage to make them understand the diversity and the beauty of the life which populates the universe, which does not deserve to be annihilated.
But while it happened to work this time, the Infinites are still a huge threat: if they decided to resume their mass extinction, it is difficult to see what could stop them.
