If the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a hit for almost 15 years in the cinema, it has also flourished for several years on the small screen. One of the most popular Marvel series is undoubtedly Loki. In a recent interview, its creator returned to the end of the first season and more particularly to the identity of a character.
The appearance of a new villain at the end of Loki
To understand everything about what is happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or even universes since the appearance of the multiverse), you have to hang on to the many projects. Among the successful Marvel series in recent years, Loki goes to the top of the basket. Its creator and screenwriter, Michael Waldron, also writing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which will be released on May 4, recently returned to the first season.
He too is aware of the difficulty for fans to fully immerse themselves in the MCU, as there are so many plots and characters. So he decided to make his miniseries easier to understand by changing a character’s identity. Its goal ? Don’t add another character that came out of nowhere and that no one knows about. So here’s why in Loki, Kang the Conqueror is “The One Who Remains”.
Two characters in one so as not to lose the viewer
At the end of the first season of Loki, the character of Nathaniel Richards, alias Kang the Conqueror, makes a surprise appearance in the guise of actor Jonathan Majors, whom we did not expect before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2023. More specifically, it is “The One Who Remains” (or “He Who Remains”), a variant of Kang. However, this is not the case in the comics, or the true identity of this character is not known.
He Who Remains is just some kind of creepy old guy in the comics. So I pressed Marvel, who were very receptive to the idea that it should be a variant of Kang. Because I knew Kang would land as a villain in the MCU and it was just too tempting to weave it into our story somehow. The whole thing was to be able to justify his role there, but Marvel was very supportive of me on this. Michael Waldron
So that’s why Michael Waldron kind of decided to blend the stories of two Marvel characters into one.
A connection between Loki and Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness?
The guy also worked on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will be out in about two weeks. The opportunity for him to cast doubt when asked if the rumors that Loki will appear in the film are founded.
Everything is intertwined and everything is autonomous. You’ll have a better time watching the next chapter in an MCU story if you’ve seen what’s come before. But, luckily, even if you’ve never set foot there, you’ll have a blast. Michael Waldron
