Marvel: the director of Avengers Endgame reveals the secret of the success of the MCU

With nearly 15 years of existence and more than 25.6 billion dollars (about 23 billion euros) generated at the worldwide box office, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is without doubt one of the most appreciated – and the most profitable – cinematic sagas that have existed. She obviously owes this to several elements, but one in particular would stand out.

The phenomenal success of the MCU

Omnipresent in the film industry, in the media sphere and in popular culture in general, the MCU is a veritable gold mine for Marvel. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, is well aware of this and continues to capitalize on the most popular superheroes (and others less so) to constantly create new stories.

And we may be overdosed on films and series stamped Marvel, the observation is clear: the formula continues to interest and even manages to attract new viewers with each new release. But then, what is this success due to? Spectacular action scenes? To the often memorable dialogues? To the more intimate scenes that make our favorite superheroes more human? A little of all that, of course, but it’s above all the humor that makes the franchise work so well, according to director Joe Russo (to the left of his brother in the photo below).

humor as a pillar of the mcu

A few days ago, one of the Russo brothers, Joe, was interviewing Deadline. The co-director ofAvengers: Infinity War and Endgame took the opportunity to return to the traumatic but nevertheless heroic death of Iron Man (no spoiler, there is prescription). But he also talked about the reasons for the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the main one being humor. Thanks Kevin Feige.

“Marvel’s secret recipe is that Kevin [Feige] loves entertaining movies. Entertainment usually involves humor, and I think Kevin is very attached to film testing: I think he likes to sit in front of test screenings and hear people’s feedback. Because when the audience laughs, you hear their feedback. You say to yourself: “Okay, every two minutes, they enjoy watching the film”. It’s a good way to [Kevin Feige] to gauge the success the film will have in front of an audience. So I think humor is very important to him.” Joe Russo

A finding that we can only support as humor occupies a prominent place in Marvel Studios productions. And in your eyes, what is the miracle ingredient that explains the success of the MCU?
