After an intention to buy announced in December 2017, Disney finally seized the Fox franchises. The cinematographic rights of several heroes finally return to the drawers of the House of Ideas, allowing it in particular to integrate the X-Men (or at least Professor Xavier) in the next film Doctor Strange. But the X-Men also exist on the side of Marvel comics, with particularly powerful characters.
a powerful version
With Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel laid the foundations of the Multiverse. Dimensional changes that allow you to find various characters in different versions. A glimpse of the Multiverse could notably be glimpsed in the series Loki of Disney +, where the adoptive brother of Thor finds himself surrounded by a myriad of other Loki. A narrative arc that follows the Infinity Saga during which the Avengers had to come together to defeat Thanos. But Marvel is above all stories told through comics.
More than 80 years of successive stories that still continue to be published. And lately, readers of the comic book series X Lives of Wolverine were able to figure out why Wolverine recently obtained his most powerful form. In X Deaths of Wolverine #5Marvel recounts a new fight between the menacing Omega Red and Wolverine:
“THE FUTURE CRASHES INTO THE PRESENT WITH A TEST OF STRENGTH YOU’LL HAVE TO SEE TO BELIEVE! WEEK 10 – It’s WOLVERINE vs. WOLVERINE?! With the time travel mission behind it, the truth will be revealed. But who – or WHAT – will remain the OMEGA WOLVERINE?”
In this issue by Benjamin Percy, Federico Vicentini and Adam Kubert, Wolverine finally gives some long-awaited reasons for his most powerful form. And for good reason, in Avengers Forever #4readers learn that a variant of Wolverine is the Phoenix Force’s oldest host. As the Marvel Fanmade Wiki explains: “The Phoenix Force is one of the oldest cosmic entities, representing unborn life, as well as the forces of creation and destruction. She seems to be older than darkness and to be the fire from which all things are born. The Phoenix Force is an indestructible, immortal and mutable manifestation of the primary universal force of life..” And in the cinema, the Phoenix Force has notably been seen in X-Men: Dark Phoenixwhere Jean Gray becomes the new host of the Phoenix Force.
An entity that grants him incredible but difficult to contain powers. Jean Grey, despite her strong potential, cannot resist her. And in the past, Wolverine has categorically refused to serve as his host. Only, it now seems that a variant of Logan has finally abdicated. Why ? Wolverine is however not the type to accept that a cosmic entity takes possession of his body. Logan would probably rather die than leave his body in the hands of the Phoenix Force. Readers therefore struggled to understand how a Wolverine could be the oldest host of this entity. Fans curious as to why Wolverine would suddenly embrace a power he rejected need look no further than a text in X Lives of Wolverine #5. An answer that is in a page of text provided by X Deaths of Wolverine #5.
Wolverine recounts a visit to Mexico. While near the ruins of Coba, he imagines a scene there hundreds of years old, of a child making a remark about tearing down the ruins to build something new. Wolverine is clearly annoyed and states that many people, like this child, only live in the present, with no real knowledge of their history. The mutant thinks many people live like this out of fear – a prospect he is jealous of. He goes on to say that it’s his job to take a “long view” of history, saying, “to know what blood has shed before is to know what blood will shed again.”
“It’s my duty to keep watching” he ends by explaining. This sentence can be seen as that of a Guardian, a race of cosmic entities who have devoted themselves to the observation of the universe and its inhabitants, without intervening. By possessing something as powerful as the Phoenix Force, Wolverine can continue to watch over history and humanity. And for good reason, the Force of the Phoenix gives him fantastic powers, increasing his healing factor, making him virtually immortal. Additionally, Wolverine’s healing factor seems to help him withstand further aggression from the Phoenix Force. Logan could thus do better than the previous hosts of the entity, thanks to his natural powers.
