Quitting smoking: a study, conducted by French scientists, has brought to light an effective new method that could help smokers quit smoking. Leenkus explains everything about this discovery.
Quitting smoking: a complicated decision!
Smokers will all agree on one thing: quitting smoking is easier said than done. From now on, it is not the will that is lacking. In fact, an Ifop study reveals that 7 out of 10 smokers have already tried to quit without succeeding. Of which 42% on several occasions.
The reason for their failures? Stress, basically. But also the fear of lack and recovery after being offered a cigarette. Yet, although willpower is essential to quitting smoking, personalized support can be beneficial.
Indeed, getting help from a health professional, using patches… These tips can be useful during the smoking cessation period. But a brand new method, which could well prove to be very effective in quitting smoking, has just been unveiled by researchers from the University Hospital Center (CHU) in Dijon.
Brain stimulation could help quit smoking
According to a study published in the journal Addiction on April 25…Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of seven studies, including 669 patients in total. In fact, all of them were trying to quit smoking, scientists followed him for several weeks. They therefore wanted to observe the effects that “non-invasive brain stimulation” or NIBS in English could have. According to them, this method has already proven its effectiveness on certain addiction-related disorders.
In fact, the smokers who participated in this study were divided into several groups. Some received sham brain stimulation. The results are clear: smokers who had real brain stimulation had a “2.39 times higher” probability of abstinence from smoking. This compared to those having received a fictitious one. “Noninvasive brain stimulation can improve smoking abstinence rates 3 to 6 months after smoking cessation. Compared to sham GSIN or usual treatment”. Conclude the authors of the study.
Nicotine substitutes…
“In the near future, NIBS may be recognized as a promising new option to help people who want to quit smoking.” Also specifies Benjamin Petit, one of the researchers, in a press release.
An additional motivation for people who wish to put an end to their cigarette consumption? Until then, there are many substitutes for nicotine.
Stopping smoking: when do we see the first benefits?
Moreover, in his column broadcast on RTL, the doctor Michel Cymes recalls that certain benefits of quitting smoking are immediate. Blood pressure is actually back to normal after 20 minutes. While the amount of nicotine in the blood decreases by half after 8 hours. After a few days, taste and smell are “sharpened”.
The cough and shortness of breath may even subside after a few months. The specialist points out, however, that it will take several years to reduce all the cardiovascular risks associated with smoking. So if you really need help to quit smoking, you can go to the Tobacco Info Service site.
