Expected for September 2, 2022, the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power spill a lot of ink. Today, we are interested in one of the most traumatic events that will be told in the series, and which should shock fans of peter jackson.
A cruel death
With House of the Dragonthe spin-off series of Game Of Throneswhose release date was recently revealed, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be one of the great events of the year in terms of Fantasy. Highly anticipated by JRR Tolkien fans, the Amazon Prime Video series has been the subject of many lively discussions after the release of its first trailer.
The two series should presumably offer two radically different visions of fantasy: adaptation of the novel Fire and Blood by George RR Martin will offer a dark atmosphere and gender violencetypical of Gritty Fantasy (not to be confused with Dark Fantasy), while Rings of Power will take place in a High Fantasy world. However, this will not prevent The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to have its traumatic moments, such as celebrimbor’s death.
This Elf Noldo, grandson of Fëanor, is known to be a particularly talented blacksmith. Abused by Sauron like the other Noldor, he participated in the forging of the Rings of Power. Nevertheless, alone he forged Narya, Nenya and Vilya, the three Elven Rings, thus preserved from the defilement of Sauron. He then gave them to Galadriel, Cirdan and Gil-galad. In The Silmarillionwe can read :
These were the Three that had been made last, and had the greatest power: Narya, Nenya and Vilya, the Rings of Fire, Water and Air, set with rubies, diamonds and sapphires. . Sauron desired them above all else, for those who wore them could escape the effects of time and roll back the weariness of the world. He could not discover them, for they had been entrusted to the hands of the Sages who hid them and no longer used them openly as long as Sauron kept the One Ring. The Three remained undefiled, for Celebrimbor alone had forged them and the hand of Sauron had never touched them. Yet they were subject to the Unique.
Sauron sought to know the location of the Elvish Rings. After invading Eriador, the Dark Lord managed to kill Celebrimbor after a final confrontation. Yes The Silmarillion is quite evasive about the death of the Elf Noldo, Unfinished Tales and Legends we learn more about the circumstances of his death, specifically in chapter 4.
Thus, Tolkien explains that Sauron captured Celebrimbor at the end of a last combat in front of the entry of the House of Mírdain. The ancient blacksmith was tortured for a long time, but never disclosed the location of the Elven Three Rings. Sauron eventually put him to death, and used his corpse pierced with arrows and hung on a pole as a standard to undermine the morale of the Elves who came as reinforcements.
This particularly cruel death should be a particularly moving moment in the Amazon Prime Video series, which would thus go where Peter Jackson himself never went. Indeed, if there are indeed deaths in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings, none are as atrocious as that of Celebrimbor. Furthermore, we recall that the torture scene of Gollum in The Fellowship of the Ring is very fast. It remains to be seen, however, how the teams of the series will manage to reveal the death of the Elf Noldo.
