The Batman: No, you haven't really seen the Joker in Matt Reeves' film

The Batman is still in room in some cinemas France and the film has had real success, by offering a new, more human vision of its iconic charactersstanding out from the supermen of the Justice League. And by the way, the character seen in one scene of the film is not really the character you expect, according to the director from the movie Matt Reeves.

The Batman : A joker up his sleeve

The Batman was a real breath of fresh air, or rather of darkness in the superheroic landscape proposed by DC Comics. The company seeks to stand out and find its place against the giant Marvel and its very aggressive style of film-content creation. Warner is increasingly looking for writers who will come looking for new ways to tell the stories of your favorite characters.and Matt Reeves is no exception by proposing in his film The Batman a far more dark comics-focused version of the character than any of the other Dark Knight iterations. The film already presents us with tragic versions of Batman (Robert Pattinson), Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) or even the mystery man (Paul Dano) and the Penguin (Colin Farrell) whose makeup required more than two hours a day. Moreover, you can find a video of it in our article here.

In a scene from the film, it was possible to see the Riddler alongsidea new character, locked up in Arkham Asylum. Quickly, all fans identified the most popular adversary of Batman, in the presence of the Joker. But its status is still undefined, and Matt Reeves answered this question in a deleted scene not present in the film but published afterwards by Warner. According to him, Barry Keoghan’s Joker does not yet exist, he has not yet been created in the genesis of the film:

For me, the most important thing was to try to launch the sequel to Batman: Years 1 and Years 2. That is to say, all the characters that we know in Gotham already exist, but have not yet been “transformed”. . Here we have a version of this character who isn’t the Joker yet, but will be. And I wanted Batman to have had an experience with him before, so I put him in Arkham. It means something happened between them in that first year, and they had a bond from the start. I wanted this version of the character to go back to his original inspiration, that of Conrad Veidt in the silent film The Man Who Laughs.

The Batman : a Joker close to his sources

Matt Reeves is a big fan of the Batman character and especially his adventures on paper. He was greatly inspired by many comics to bring out a dark and tortured Batman. In the quote he mentioned Year 1 as one of its main sources, but others accompany them, such as Ego (2000) or A long Halloween (1996). Two comics whose source and importance in the director’s work we explain in an article to be found right here.

Reeves’ Idea for the Joker Is to Show the Status Quo Between Him and Batman in the Next Movie. To see how the character could evolve and become the Joker, we can refer to the excellent comics The Killing Joke and the comics Batman New 52, who develop the idea that the Joker was one of the members of the Red Hood Gang before he was plunged into the vat of chemicals. At the moment he is just a prisoner and later events will cause him to become the real Joker. It remains to be seen how this will be shown on the big screen and what path Matt Reeves will choose.
