Review Jujutsu Kaisen 0: a film that shows us the omnipotence of MAPPA (without spoiler)

The animated movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0the very first anime film based on the manga, was released in France at the cinema March 16, 2022. We had the chance to see it in preview, and we offer you some today a review, without spoiler.

the synopsis of Jujutsu Kaisen 0

The animated movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0 adapts, as its name suggests, volume 0 of the manga. In this prequel, you should not expect to see Yuji Itadori appear, since the main character, like the one volume 0, is none other than Yuta Okkotsu. The latter has been going through an ordeal since he was cursed by the spirit of his deceased childhood friend (Rika), a friend with whom, as a child, he wanted to spend the rest of his life. A promise of love that goes wrong, and which curses Yuta since the famous “accident”.

Satoru Gojowho hears about Yuta following several related incidents, will then offer him a new life by making him choose the path that Yuji will later take: the way to tokyo school of exorcism. Yuta will then have plenty of time to try to understand the curse of which he is the subject, and to seek to master his scourge. You would have understood it, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a prequel story that focuses not only on Yuta, but also on the “secondary” characters of Jujutsu Kaisenand especially to students in first (who are in second at the time), namely Toga Inumaki, Panda and Maki Zenin.

A very nice animation work on the side of mappa

From the first picture animated movie, we feel that MAPPA has done a very good job. The chosen color palettes match perfectly, the animation is fluid, and the combat scenes are just as spectacular. than in the animated series. The dynamism of the scenes, and their power, really jump to the eyes.

And speaking of “eyes”, one of the elements that makes the fame of MAPPA (and more specifically Jujutsu Kaisenbut also of SNK just to mention these two emblematic works) is the attention to detail brought to the eyes of the characters. And again, in Jujutsu Kaisen 0some close-ups will make you dive directly in shining eyes, sometimes friendly, sometimes hostile. And in any case, you will love getting lost in it.

A scenario that holds up (rhythm)

Regarding the pace of Jujutsu Kaisen 0the viewer is directly immersed in the action, but the anime nevertheless knows how to spare moments of rest, between flashbacks, and humor. It’s satisfying to focus on a new character’s story by taking the time to learn more about those around them, but sometimes it’s also a bit frustrating that the characters we’ve come to love on the show aren’t given more prominence.

A bias that we understand however, and which, in any case, constitutes a reasonable choice when we consider that the film lasts 1h45, and that it knows no length. Difficult, therefore, to expand on other characters without stretching the film. Our hopes for certain characters were therefore disappointed, but in the end, the script choice paid off. We come out of the session keeping beautiful images in mind, and telling ourselves that we understand the overall work better than before. Moreover, to answer any future questions, it will undoubtedly be important to see this film to fully understand the issues presented in future seasons of the anime.

OST, humor and references

The fact of attending “the before-Yuji” allows us to better understand the so-called “secondary” characters and their powers, starting with Satoru Gojo. Indeed, the latter took Yuta under his wing before realizing the same thing some time later with Yuji. Yuta is his first protege, and we witness certain scenes that will remind us of Yuji’s first steps at the school of exorcism. These scenes are also regularly magnified by poignant OSTswhich really plunge us into the world of exorcists.

We will also appreciate some touches of humorin particular from Panda to Yuta, which, here again, will remind us Yuji and Todo’s relationship in the anime series. Touches of humor that allow you to breathe a little between two action scenes. Finally, on the reference side, we are served, since MAPPA adapts wonderfully a very beautiful reference visible in volume 0 of Jujutsu Kaisennamely a reference to the famous horror manga Uzumakiof Junji Ito. Fans should enjoy.
