The film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessdirected by Sam Raimi, is the most anticipated film of the year 2022 for marvel fansafter the release of a No Way Home acclaimed by them. We had the chance to discover it during the press preview broadcast this morning, and we therefore offer you some a spoiler-free review.
The sequel to the Marvel series
The summary of the scenario Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessas presented to us, was as follows:
Several months later events related to Spider-Man, Doctor Strange will have to cross the hallucinating and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse. In order to be able to face this great journey, Strange seeks the help of Wanda Maximoff, who became fully Scarlet Witch, and who now has immense powers that can quickly spiral out of control. Strange, when to him, will meet America Chavez, a mysterious teenager capable ofe create portals to other universes.
And for starters, if you’re wondering, yes, some MCU productions must be seen to understand the plot that plays out in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Of course, you will have to have seen Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home and the first Doctor Strangebut above all, it will be necessary to have in mind what happened in the playoffs Wanda Vision and What If…?.
Series Wanda Vision provides the basics of scenario of Multiverse of Madness indeed, while the series What If…? will not only allow you to better understand how the multiverse works, but also to raise many winks made by Marvel studios.
The first mcu film RELATED to the horror genre
Sam Raimi wanted to create, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU’s first horror film. Doctor Strange 2 has thus obtained a PG-13 classification on the side of the Atlantic, and although on our side no measure has been taken to prohibit young children from seeing the film, it is clear that Sam Raimi has won its bet: it is indeed the the MCU’s very first horror film.
Between jump scares and other horror cinema mechanics, with well-chosen music (and well dosed) according to the sequences, this film is clearly the very first film of the MCU to make us jump several times. The flesh opens, blood is flowing, and no sound related to these wounds, however disgusting, is ignored. In fact, the action scenes are much more visualand we get caught up in the show.
Discovering newcomers
We also enjoyed discovering America Chavez characterwhich should become very important for the sequel to the MCU, with rather impressive powers.
Unfortunately, apart from the latter, the other newcomers seemed to us to be highly under-exploited, and for good reason: the film only lasts 2h06. It is very difficult, with such a duration, to focus both on what the multiverse represents, and on the newcomers presented. America Chávez therefore remains the good discovery of the film, far ahead of all the others.
The opening of the multiverse
Now let’s get to the point: what did we really think of this second installment of Doctor Strange ? Well, it should have been kept in mind that this film is primarily an introductory film for the multiverse. After No Way Home Indeed, it should be shown the possibilities offered by the multiverseand show us more about how it works overall. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is therefore a good intro movie for the multiverse, but when to know if it’s a good movie for a fan of the MCU… It remains to be seen.
With No Way Homewe dove into the wonders the multiverse potentially offers. Doctor Strange 2, for its part, favors the atmosphere and the scenario over fan service. On some points, it’s pleasant, and on others, it’s rather disappointing. The opening of the multiverse gave rise to many possibilities, and above all Marvel sought to show that they existed, without actually presenting them to us. In other words, Marvel is keeping it under wraps, and this film should be seen as an introduction to future explosive productions, rather than as a production that will go down in history.
Conclusion
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a good introductory film for the opening of the multiverse, and we understand it especially at the very end of the film. However, after No Way Home, it looks almost a bit bland, despite some pleasant surprises. Marvel therefore gives us mouth water, but does not give us anything substantial afterwards, nothing enough, in any case, to sustain us. Fortunately, the talent of Sam Raimi allows the film to stand out from its predecessors, by installing a sympathetic horrific atmosphere. For sure, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will divide the fans. Remember, though, to stick around until the end of the credits. You know, Marvel gets us used to post-credits scenes, and this movie is no exception.
