Portal: the cult puzzle game recreated under Unreal Engine 5 is stunning (video)

Unreal Engine 5, for everyone

Now equipped with the Unreal Engine 5 developed by Epic Gamesvideo game development studios finally seem to have something to impress players and definitively launch the next generation of games that accompanies the PS5 or the Xbox Series.

If it is aimed at many studios like 2K (Borderlands, Civilization, Bioshock), the Chinese giant Tencent Games, Xbox Game Studios and its subsidiaries, or even PlayStations Studios, the Unreal Engine 5 is also accessible to any budding developer. eager to experience this awesome tool. Like Unreal Engine 4, using the standard license will be completely free.

A splash of paint, 15 years later

This is the case ofAlfred Beddow, a UK-based 3D modeler and environment designer. Thanks to the engine, he managed to recreate the very first level of the video game Portal released in 2007, and magnified the whole thing with the famous ray tracing. The work is indeed impressive, as evidenced by certain textures in 8K. We let you judge for yourself with this video posted by the YouTube channel Alf Does Stuff:

Carried out on behalf of a university project, this project proposes very sharp details and very realistic lighting, which gives the passage a facelift to the title of Valve released 15 years ago. Be careful though : Beddow’s project is an artistic rendering and in no way represents a possible remake of the game.

Each element of the level has been recreated from scratch with “new models and textures“, confides the artist:

In some aspects, creative freedom was exercised to improve the accuracy of the models, as the originals could be of very poor quality and difficult to reproduce. Some objects like walls and doors were taken from Portal 2. I admit that it’s not perfect and it’s missing some elements, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to do everything.

The result is nevertheless commendable, and will not fail to interest the most nostalgic among usas fans await a third installment, 11 years after the release of Portal 2.

Portal 3?

As such, we recently learned that the screenwriter of the first two parts appealed to Valve to get the studio to think about an ultimate titlebefore the original team was “literally too old to work on Portal 3“, in his own words.

However, there is little chance that this alarm bell be heard by society behind the licenses Half Life and Counter-Strike. Remember that when it came out, Portal has turned the world of video games upside down, with its sensory aspect and its management of gravity, while offering a gripping story. The second part, Portal 2 had done even better since he had buried the last traces of skepticism, and had been awarded rave reviews.
