The Academy of Oscars censored Amy Schumer
Indeed, for the Oscars 2022, Amy Schumer co-hosted the ceremony alongside Wanda Skyes and Regina Hall. Despite the incident of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock after the latter’s bad taste joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, the night rewarded many films such as Dunes Where CODA reflecting quite well what American cinema has been able to offer us over the past year.
However, there is a major event that no one has talked about and it is understandable, it is the drama that unfolded on the set of Rustthe western with Alec Baldwin last October. During rehearsals, the actor fatally shot Halyna Hutchins, the film’s director of photography with the gun that was to be used for a scene.
A joke in bad taste that would have caused an uproar
As the magazine reveals variety, Amy Schumer had planned to make a joke in reference to this accident, but she did not do it in the end because she was banned by the Academy of Oscars and more than advised against by his lawyer. But on April 2, while doing her stand-up in Las Vegas, she revealed what she intended to say during the evening :
‘Don’t Look Up’ is the name of a movie? It’s more like ‘don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s gun!
Well, we’re not going to lie to each other. the joke is also in very bad taste. And she had no place during the Oscars after the death of Halyna Hutchins. Amy Schumer did well not to make this “valve” which would have shocked the public, but also the family of Hutchins. The comedian also referenced Will Smith when he said : “I wasn’t allowed to say that at the Oscars but you can just come and slap somebody“.
For now, the investigation into the tragedy on the set of Rust continues. Recently, the film’s gunsmith blamed the fatal shooting on Alec Baldwin. According to him, the actor should in no case have pointed the weapon in the direction of Hutchins. Baldwin is not currently charged with anything, but was cited in the lawsuit filed by the victim’s family.
