Obi-Wan Kenobi: comebacks with a bang

Fifteen years after the release of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith, comedian Ewan McGregor is back as Obi-Wan Kenobi on the occasion of his own series. Directed by Hossein Amini and Joby Harold, this series will take place somewhere between episodes III and IV. The story will tell the quest of Darth Vader and his Inquisitors to find the trace of his former master, who lives recluse on Tatooine, watching the young Luke Skywalker from afar.

Besides the presence of Ewan McGregor, the series will also bring back Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker and Joel Edgerton as Uncle Owen. In addition to these iconic comebacks, the rest of the cast includes Kumail Nanjiani (The Eternals), by Sung Kang (Fast and Furious) or even Rupert Friend as the Grand Inquisitor.

A complicated shoot

Thereby, Rupert Friend has the honor of playing the Grand Inquisitor in his first live action appearance. However, if the role is iconic, it was nevertheless difficult to assume. Indeed, recently, the actor returned to the filming of the series, and the way in which he apprehended the costume and the makeup of his character. In a recent interview with The One Showthe actor spoke about the technical difficulties he faced:

It was a sweaty suit. I produced gallons of sweat inside the prosthetics of the suit, gallons that spilled over my face and made me look like a very, very miserable clown at the end of the day. But it was definitely worth it!

However, even if it was sometimes a bit difficult, it was an honor for Rupert Friend to participate in Obi-Wan Kenobi :

It’s incredible. They’ve literally built a universe over the years and what’s fantastic is that the relationship between the stories and the fans is completely intertwined. The fans are as connected to these stories as those of us who make them and you really feel like you’re in tune doing it… It’s amazing to be a part of that.

Who is the Grand Inquisitor

As a reminder, the Grand Inquisitor makes his very first appearance in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Big villain of the first two seasons of the show, he is the main antagonist of the young Ezra Bridger. The Grand Inquisitor hails from the planet Utapau, and is a member of the Pau’an species. Basically, the Grand Inquisitor is an officer within the Jedi Order. It is even one of the most important since he is a guardian of the Jedi Temple of Coruscant.

While he also appears briefly in Star Wars: The Clone Warsstill on the side of the good guys, he decides to switch sides after Order 66 and therefore joins the dark side of the Force. He then becomes the leader of the Inquisitors, a team of armed arms in the service of the Empire, whose mission is to find the last surviving Jedi.
