Netflix resumes this project abandoned by Disney following the closure of Blue Sky (Ice Age)

It is not because a company weighs heavily in the world of cinema that its course is a long calm river. Just ask Blue Sky, which Disney shut down much to the anger of fans. A very regrettable fate for the studio teams, but also for the projects that were in development and which were finally canceled. Fortunately for us, we learn that one of them has been picked up by Netflix.

A project canceled following the closure of Blue Sky

For many, Disney is the company that produced most of the animated films that rocked our childhood. Maybe you know all the music by heart and still watch your favorite movies in secret. Despite this emotional attachment of some to Disney, her reputation is very tarnished. It must be said that between the accusations of homophobia and the closure of world famous studios like Blue Sky to whom we owe The Ice Age and its consequences, there is enough.

Especially since this last point led to the cancellation of several promising projects. Among these, Nimona, an animated film inspired by the comic book of the same name by author ND Stevenson. taking place in a universe described as “techno-medieval”, the animated film will allow us to follow Nimona, a shapeshifting young girl capable of turning into a dragon (it changes from the big red panda). She will have to come to the aid of an imprisoned knight, who could well put her in danger.

Originally slated for release in January 2022, the project had therefore fallen into limbo following the closure of Blue Sky studios, but Netflix picked up the project alongside Annapurna Pictures.

A surprising cancellation

From now on, Nimona is officially announced for 2023 on Netflix, as announced on the social networks of the streaming platform.

Remember that the pure and simple cancellation of the project had caused a stir, when he said to himself that the film was already 75% finished. Since the author ND Stevenson behind the original comic was non-binary and the story had a lot of LGBTQ+ elements, it didn’t take long before the big-eared firm was accused by some of homophobia and anti-progressivism. A situation that has not improved with the recent controversies on this subject around Disney.

Whatever, Nimona will indeed see the light of day in 2023 exclusively on Netflix and should highlight the LGBTQ+ community and break the clichés about it, to the delight of some and the frustration of others.
