Every Wednesday, a new episode of the series Moon Knight comes out on Disney+. While two episodes have already seen the light of day, the biggest finding is that the show is globally disconnected from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Even though Moon Knight is grounded in the MCU, for now the showrunners have decided to offer virtually no connection to the rest of the Marvel Universe. However, the series carried by Oscar Isaac, will have consequences on the future of the MCU, as we explain to you here.
Moon Knight: A Whole New Identity
Led by Jeremy Slater, series Moon Knight seeks to stand out from the rest of the MCU. Darker, more psychological, it acts as a side to the rest of the MCU landscape. In this logic, the series Moon Knight is largely disconnected from the rest of the Marvel Universe. However, it should have serious consequences for the future of the MCU.
The story of Moon Knight tells the story of Steven Grant, a simple museum employee, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. He shares his body with mercenary Mark Spector and vigilante Moon Knight, who is himself the avenging arm of the Egyptian god Khonshu. Worn by Oscar Isaac, the series has met with great critical and popular success on Disney +.
How can Moon Knight impact the rest of the MCU?
Like every element of the MCU, the series Moon Knight leave here and there some seeds that will be useful in the future of phase 4 of the marvel universe. Indeed, Khonshu and the rest of the Egyptian gods serve an important purpose. First of all, they make it possible to familiarize the spectators with the existence of other gods. For the moment, the only deities present in the MCU, are the asgardian gods. Yet the Marvel Universe is full of other gods from totally different beliefs and mythologies. In comics, it’s quite simple, all the gods of each religion do exist.
If the saga Thor explored Norse mythology, at the moment, the other beliefs are outside the MCU. Thus, the treatment of Egyptian mythology helps remind viewers that there are other gods in the Marvel universe, and that these will soon land in the MCU. In effect, Moon Knight therefore prepares the ground for Thor: Love and Thunder. Indeed, Taika Waititi’s film will address Greek mythology. Russell Crowe will indeed play Zeus in the new opus of the saga Thor and thus potentially introduce the rest of the gods of Olympus in the MCU. An approach that provokes a mirror sensation compared to Moon Knight which already explores the gods of Heliopolis.
But it’s not the only film that can use the scheme of Moon Knight. In effect, Khonshu isn’t the first Egyptian god to appear in the MCU. Indeed, in Black PantherT’Challa regularly chats with Bast, the panther god of Wakanda. But Bast is inspired by Bastet, an important figure in Egyptian mythology. The emphasis on the avatars of the Egyptian gods in Moon Knight thus suggests the possibility that Black Panther is also the armed arm of a god, in this case Bast. He would therefore also be an avatar of this powerful deity. Moon Knight could be a way to develop Wakandan mythology in Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverand potentially explore the superhero’s trail as an avatar of Bast.
At last, Moon Knight could also have an implication on the creation of Blade in the MCU. Indeed, in Egyptian legend, the goddess Sekhmet is responsible for the creation of vampires. In Egyptian tales, Sekhmet is banished from Heliopolis by Ra to punish mankind for their disobedience. She then decides to attack the humans. Very quickly she takes a liking to human blood, which becomes one of her primary motivations in the extermination of all the human beings she meets. This approach could allow to introduce vampires into the MCU. And so, therefore, the famous Blade. Perhaps the first vampire will be the avatar of Sekhmet, that this one will contaminate the earthlings, and that Blade will have to find his trace and free the Earth from the yoke of the original vampire.
A series of rather interesting theories that we leave you at your disposal. Do not hesitate to propose others to us or to tell us what you think of these hypotheses. In any case, series Moon Knight is available every Wednesday on Disney+.
