Marvel unveils its new punk variant of Spider-Man

With the multiverse now openwe should expect to see more and more variants of our favorite heroes on the side of Marvel. We have already had the opportunity to discover some in the trailers of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand we have the opportunity today to introduce you to another variant: Spider-Punk.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers regarding Spider-Punk #1 by Cody Ziglar, Justin Mason, Jim Charalampidis and Travis Lanham. Do not continue reading if you do not want to read it.

A new team

The comics Spider-Punk #1 has been available for only 2 days, and this issue marks the debut of the Spider-Band, with Spider PunkKarl Morningdew/Captain Anarchy and Robbie Banner/Hulk, joined by newcomers Paola, Rick and, of course, Riri Williams (the heroine who succeeds Iron Man in the comics).

Contrary to its Earth-616 counterpart, the Riri of Earth-138 is not Ironheart, but RiotHeart. Like Ironheart, the latter wears custom armor, similar to Iron Man’s, but what really sets her apart is the worn look of her armor, its punk-rock tips and the different designs present on said armor. When she is not wearing her armor, the Riri of Earth-138 also wears a leather jacket, ripped jeans, a studded collar and a half-shaved hairstyle.

Generally, Spider-Punk #1 features many punk rock-inspired elements that fans of the genre will certainly recognize. For example, the number opens on the phrase “I’m a street-walkin’ cheetah with a heart full of napalm”, from the lyrics of the song Ssearch and Destroy, from Iggy and the Stooges. Additionally, the number ends with a variant of Taskmaster that says the phrase “If you’re gonna scream, scream with me!” (“If you have to scream, scream with me!“) taken from the song Hybrid Moments misfits.

Zoom on the Spider-Punk

Earth-138’s Spider-Punk first appeared in 2014 in Amazing Spider-Man #10 as an inspired variant of punk rock, and named Hobart Brown, who became Spider-Man in place of Peter Parker. In previous comics, become the anarchist Spider-Man, Spider Punk made himself the protector of the oppressed, and led them to overthrow the authority of President Osborn. With this first volume of a new series of comics, we should expect all new stories around Spider-Punk, to get to know the character better. It is therefore a known variant but treated very differently, since we know that each team in charge of a comic imagines different stories around a character. So we can’t wait to see what Marvel has in store for this one.
