Available for a week in our cinemas, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (whose ending we could have guessed) is, like almost every Marvel film, a hit at the box office, although it does not reach the incredible scores of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Moreover, it would seem that an inconsistency between the two films exists in the last film of Sam Raimi. It can be explained in part, but in any case risks raising many questions. A scene that refers to Spider-Man: No Way Home
For just over two hours, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness isn’t one of the longest MCU films, but still had time to raise many questions. From how the multiverse works, to the impact the new incursion concept will have, to the role new characters like America Chavez will have to play, there’s plenty to rack your brains.
One scene in particular raises many questions, or rather highlights some that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been asking since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Rich in humor, emotions and above all action, Jon Watts’ feature film is above all a real love letter to fans of the spider-man. Their hearts probably sank at the end of the film, when neither Ned nor MJ recognize Peter Parker, after the latter asked Doctor Strange to erase his identity from all memories.
But it is precisely this element which is at the heart of an apparent inconsistency in Doctor Strange 2.
How does Doctor Strange remember Spider-Man?
During a scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessStephen answers questions from America Chavez in the presence of Wong, explaining to him that he has already dealt with the problems caused by the multiverse when he helped Spider-Man some time before. Only, it may seem strange that he remembers his friend, since his fate of oblivion is supposed to have affected the entire population, including him.
We could then say that the explanation is relatively simple: Stephen Strange forgot Peter Parker, but remembers collaborating with Spider-Man several times, the masked superhero whose identity he would not know. This would mean that the spell he cast made him forget all the times he saw Peter Parker’s face or heard his name. Strange, when you know that the whole plot of No Way Home precisely based on this. Besides, he seems to know Spidey very well, since he jokingly replies to America that he will ask her if webs are coming out of certain parts of her body. Suffice to say that these are not the kind of questions you ask a stranger. It therefore does not refer to the Spider-Men of Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire, whom he has rarely encountered and who have since returned to their respective universes.
If we cannot therefore qualify this scene as strictly speaking incoherence, it raises many questions, particularly concerning what Strange remembers of the events of No Way Home. So here we touch on one of the problems of the MCU which, to become more and more complex, pays for Kevin Feige’s lack of global vision.
