PS5: this new feature makes your games smoother and crisper, here's how to activate it

A few days ago, Sony announced that a new feature allowed lucky PlayStation 5 owners to see their games benefit from a serious refresh. This technology is called the VRR, and has just landed. What is that ? How to activate it? And what is the list of compatible games?

The vr?

Released on November 19, 2020, almost a year and a half ago now, the PS5 begins its story in a rather mixed way. To this day, console shortages still make the envious suffer, and gamers still hope for games that finally live up to their white tower, though works like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apartor more recently Horizon: Forbidden West gives the first sketches of what the beast has in its belly.

First point of satisfaction, the arrival of the VRR, a technology to make games sharper and smoother. PlayStation describes its technology as such: “a technology that dynamically synchronizes the refresh rate of the display to the video output of the console ”. In sum, the VRR adapts the refresh rate of your screen with the number of frames per second broadcast in game.

Thus, players should not suffer FPS loss during their movements thanks to the VRR. The gameplay will therefore be more fluid, which will make the gaming experience more enjoyable.

For whom, and which games?

Be careful though, if this technology currently only includesa short list of games, which we will detail a little further down, it is not intended for everyone. In this case, it is necessary to benefit from recent televisions, which support a screen with an HDMI 2.1, and that your PlayStation 5 console is connected to it via the latter with the corresponding cable. Regarding the list of compatible games, here it is:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • death loop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

Path to follow

To benefit from it, it is necessary to download update, then update the game concerned to be able to activate it. If your configuration can support it, VRR should already be enabled on your PS5 and will be set to “Automatic”. Otherwise, here’s what to do:

  • Make sure you have the latest software update installed on your PlayStation 5
  • Go to the “Settings” of the PS5
  • Select “Screen and Video”, then “Video Out”
  • Scroll down until you get to ‘VRR’
  • Set your VRR to “Automatic”

Such an option should a priori improve the gaming experience and optimize the visual performance of many console titles, without however acting as a revolution. The list of games supporting VRR should of course grow over time, but here’s a serious boost, especially for games like Call of Duty Vanguard, where the camera is constantly moving.
