Last December, fans discovered the first trailer for the sequel to Spider-Man: Next Generationtitled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1. And while fans were eager to watch the next adventures of Miles Morales on the big screen, this bad news confirms that we will have to continue to take our troubles patiently.

Sony has announced that the long-awaited animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has been postponed to next year. Long before the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home brings the multiverse to life with three iterations of Peter Parker, Sony brought the concept to the big screen with a colorful animated film that won over audiences. Released in 2018, Spider-Man: Next Generation was very well received by critics, while grossing over $375 million worldwide. A sequel was then launched even before the release of the first film.
Originally titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1, the upcoming film will once again follow Miles Morales’ adventures across the multiverse. This will then be the opportunity to find Shameik Moore (the actor who lends his voice to Miles Morales), as well as Oscar Isaac (Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099), Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy) and Jake Johnson (Peter B. Parker) who will reprise their roles from the first film, while Issa Rae will join the cast as Spider-Woman.
Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 went into production in 2020 and was originally slated for release this month. But it was then shifted to release in October of this year, or at least that’s what was planned. Sony has announced that in addition to dropping “Part 1” from its title, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will now be released in June 2023, eight months after the last scheduled date. And its sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 2already planned, should be released in March 2024.
The reason Sony chose to delay Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse isn’t entirely clear, but it’s likely to have something to do with the production of the film. Because although the production process has been underway for almost two years already, the first film used a very complex animation style, which therefore takes time to be well done.
And the next animated Spider-Man film builds on this principle, with the ambition to use a different style for each universe.. So it makes sense that Sony chose to push back the film’s release date to give the creative team time to make it perfect. In parallel, the studio has just made several release date adjustmentsso it is possible that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has also been affected by these changes.
Whatever the reason, this postponement of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a blow to the fans. If the film’s original release date had been maintained, audiences would have already been able to enjoy Miles Morales’ latest adventure on the big screen. The prospect of Sony’s animated film arriving later this year has been met with excitement, but fans will have to wait a little longer. And given the expectations the next animated movie is raising, it might just be best for Sony to take its time.so that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is up to the expectations of the fans.
