Dragon Ball Z vs. One Piece
On my right, One Piecea shonen series created in 1997 by Eiichiro Oda. In April 2022, there are 102 official volumes of the series, and Eiichiro Oda continues to release new chapters regularly. The story follows the adventures of Luffy, a young boy with extraordinary elastic powers, who decides to become a pirate. Like all his peers, he sets out to find the ultimate treasure known as One Piece in order to become the next Pirate King. The manga rights are acquired by the company Toei Animation which adapts One Piece in anime from 1999. The series has over 1000 episodes as of November 2021. Currently, One Piece is the best-selling manga in the world with a total of 500 million copies sold between its creation and March 2022.
On my left, Dragon Ball Zthe boss of bosses. Created by Akira Toriyama in 1984, dragonball is the father of all shonens. The story tells of Son Goku’s fate from childhood to adulthood. Accompanied by the Z family, he repeatedly searches for the Dragon Balls, 7 magic crystal balls which allow him to resolve important conflicts. The animation adaptation is divided into two distinct parts: dragonballwhich focuses on the youth of the protagonist, and Dragon Ball Z who recounts his adventures as an adult. With over 260 million copies sold Worldwide, Dragon Ball remains one of the best-selling manga in history. It is also a major title at the time of the outbreak of manga culture in Europe, at the end of the 1980s. Currently, the saga continues with new chapters of Dragon Ball Super which continue to come out every month.
The ultimate crossover
Did you know that these two emblematic mangas have already crossed paths on the occasion of a unique crossover? In April 2013, a 48-minute short film entitled Dragon Ball ZX Toriko X One Piece see the day on Japanese television. The purpose of this program is to promote the cinema release of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The opportunity to see an unprecedented meeting between Luffy, Son Goku and Toriko, the hero of the eponymous manga created by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro in 2008.
A few years before the release of this crossover, a manga titled Cross Epochcreated by Akira Toriyama and Eiichiro Oda themselves is born and brings together for the first time the universes of dragonball and of One Piece. In 2011, Eiichiro Oda tried the experiment again, this time in the company of Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro. Dragon Ball ZX Toriko X One Piece tells how the International Gourmet Organization is launching a Biggest Meat Eater Tournament, with the top prize being a leg of divine meat, coveted by Gourmet hunter Toriko, super-warrior San Goku and rubber band pirate Luffy. This short film is referenced as the 590th episode of the series One Piece. But due to its non-canon nature, this special episode is unfortunately not available on DNA.
