Moon Knight: The Marvel Series Gets Shot Over This Armenian Genocide Reference

New series from the Marvel studio, the series Moon Knight debuted on Disney+ on March 30. Barely released, the first episode is talked about, especially because of a reference to the Armenian genocide.

A controversial scene

After Wanda Vision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…? and Hawkeye, Moon Knight is the sixth Marvel Cinematic Universe series to be released on Disney+. Highly anticipated by fans, the series worn by the brilliant Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, Show Me A Hero, Star Wars, Dunes) carries many promises.

If the first episode of the series, broadcast on March 30, 2022, seemed to have been much appreciated (especially for its references) by the spectators, who underlined its originality, contrasting with what Marvel Studios had accustomed us to, this did not prevent the series from arousing an outcry among some spectators.

The reason ? A reference to the Armenian Genocide. In one scene, Arthur Harrow, the character played by Ethan Hawke to Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac), explains :

Ammit’s justice applies to life as a whole. Past present Future. She knows what we have done, what we will do. Know one thing, if Ammit had been free, she would have spared us Hitler and all the harm he caused. Nero, the Armenian Genocide, Pol Pot. But she was betrayed.

Thereby, with this scene, Disney and Marvel Studios acknowledge the existence of the Armenian Genocide. According to our colleagues from comic bookthis mention caused the wrath of a group of trolls from Turkey, who would have used the technique of review bombing on IMDb : practice of creating a rain of bad reviews in order to lower the rating of a film or series. The comments left on the site are quite eloquent as to the reasons for this review bombing: “The story should be discussed by historians, not the Hollywood industry.“, “These claims about the Armenian Genocide only serve to shrink history; Hollywood loves to do that.“, “The American movie industry loves pumping out fake news about the fake “Armenian Genocide”“. It should also be noted that the lMDb moderators seem to have cleaned up the comments, most of those denying the existence of the genocide having been deleted.

It is recalled that the Armenian genocide took place between the spring of 1915 and the autumn of 1916 in the former Ottoman Empire (Turkey today), and caused between 1.2 and 1.5 million deaths. If many countries have officially recognized the Armenian genocide, including France, the United States, Lebanon, Italy, Greece, two countries however reject the existence of an Armenian genocide: Turkey and Pakistan. The recognition process is a very long process, the United States having officially recognized it only from 2019.
