A little throwback to the days of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. Remember, Obi-Wan Kenobi goes to face General Grievous during the Battle of Utapau, at the very end of the Clone Wars. Unsurprisingly, the famous Jedi emerges victorious from this confrontation. However, the cyborg’s death disappointed many fans because of a one-sided fight for Obi-Wan. Back to the expedited death of General Grievous.
Grievous: an iconic character for many fans
General Grievous is one of the universe’s favorite villains for many fans Star Wars. Created by George Lucas himself, this famous cyborg makes his very first appearance in the film Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. Incarnated for the occasion by Antoine Rampaly, General Grievous is originally a Kaleesh general named Qymaen Jai Sheelal. He stands out for his feats of arms during the war against the Huks. His talent for fighting challenges the Dooku account who asks him to join him. But Grievous refuses. Count Dooku then sabotages his crashing ship.. In his fall, Grievous is mortally wounded. He was healed by the Geonosians and then became the general of the Confederation. Quickly, Grievous becomes a formidable warrior and an outstanding Jedi killer.
Subsequently, the character is back in the first series Clone Warsdirected by Genny Tartakovsky and aired from 2003 to 2005 on Cartoon Network. In this excellent animated series available on Disney+, Grievous is growing in popularity and prominence. Genny Tartakovsky stages it in a muscular way and presents it as one of the worst Jedi killers in the galaxy. The character is then back in the second series Clone Wars, where again he plays the saber in an unusual way. Grievous is definitely one of the antagonists who has killed the most Jedi in his career. So if he’s that dangerous, how to explain his wobbly death in Revenge of the Sith ?
A disappointing death
Just introduced in Revenge of the Sith, Grievous finds death a little later in this same film. Without both series Clone Wars, Grievous wouldn’t have the aura he currently has with fans. If he had confined himself to George Lucas’ feature film, Grievous would have remained an asthmatic robot killed by Obi-Wan. But fans know that General Grievous is much more than that. In any case, the character finds death in Revenge of the Sith, coldly murdered by Obi-Wan Kenobi. During the Battle of Utapau, General Kenobi finds himself in single combat against General Grievous. A fight that quickly falls one way and sees the famous Jedi win hands down. A death that disappointed a good part of the fans.
One of the main explanations for the rapid death of Grievous relates to his fighting style. Indeed, Grievous received training from the Dooku account. But then Grievous improved his own style. The famous antagonist then defeated many Jedi by turning their own fighting style against them. But Kenobi outsmarted his peers. The Jedi preferred to play defensively rather than attacking until waiting for the right opportunity to act. A strategy that paid off against the powerful cyborg.
But the real reason we all know: That is luck. Obi-Wan Kenobi took advantage of a moment of inattention and haste from his opponent to deliver the fatal blow. Few Jedi would have used the blaster pistol to defeat their enemy. But Obi-Wan didn’t hesitate for a second. One thing is sure, Grievous deserved a better death…
