While the Dark Saber is the relic that has been on everyone’s mind since the end of the series The Mandalorian and The Boba Fett Book (due to their intrinsic connection), another even lesser known and perhaps rarer one exists, and has been forgotten. To the point of reintegrating it into future Star Wars series?
The Black Saber, the most mysterious of the sabers
Inducted into the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Warsthe Dark Saber has since come a long way in the Star Wars universe since it was then introduced in Star Wars: Rebelsand more recently in The Mandalorian and The Boba Fett Book.
Very singular, since its blade is black, this saber has always been enveloped in a particular aura. Said to restore the planet Mandalore and save its people from chaos if in the right hands, it can also, conversely, curse if not acquired properly. All this contributes to a very strong hype around the relic, which should be at the center of the next season of The Mandalorian.
A sword with an extremely rare frame
But another sword, less known to the general public, and yet just as rare and unique, exists, and was narrated from episode 6 of season 5 of The Clone Warsuntil episode 8. Indeed, on the occasion of episode 6, entitled Collection, young Jedi are sent under the authority of Ashoka Tano to the planet Ilum, in order to continue their training. This is an important step since the young Jedi apprentices must recover Kyber crystals, material necessary in the construction of a lightsaber.
Among the young troop is Gungi, a Wookie who manages to find his Kyber crystal. It is then with the help of the instructor droid Huyang, that he will manage to find his handle, and thus assemble his sword. The handle that the young Wookie chooses has the unique feature of being wood, and not just any wood, Brylark wood. Found only on Kashyyyk, the home planet of the Wookies, this rare wood is known to be extremely durable.
Wookie + Jedi = assured hype?
The wooden handle of Gungi in The Clone Wars is thus unique in the Star Wars universe, since it is the first time that a wooden lightsaber is mentioned there (if we ignore the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, where the player can customize and change the color of their lightsaber, as well as adapt its metal hilt to be lined with wood).
It is not known what happened to the young Wookie. But many agree that he perished during Darth Vader’s assault on the Jedi Temple. Still, if Disney were willing, Gungi could very well return in one of many upcoming Star Wars projects. The opportunity to capitalize on a Wookie Jedi. A combo that could hit the mark.
On your side, do you see, and would you like the return of such a character within the canon Star Wars universe? If yes which ? Feel free to share your ideas in the comments.
