There are many people who share their Netflix accounts with members of their family, or friends, more or less close. Today we invite you to discover how this phenomenon could be curbedby a brand new system under study at netflix.
A habit that displeases the platform
It’s no secret: streaming service subscribers often share their passwords with people outside their household. Netflix is therefore trying to find a way to limit this practice by setting up additional fees in addition to the cost of the subscription, in order to add, on the same account, users who are outside the family home. This experience will be launched in the coming weeks and will be tested at Chile, Costa Rica and Peru. The cost of this experience will be around 30% of the cost of a basic subscription, which would be equivalent to adding a few euros to your basic subscription, in Europe.
Chengyi Longdirector of product innovation at Netflix, says in a blog post :
We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans. Although they have been extremely popular, they have also created some confusion as to when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are shared between households – impacting our ability to invest in new series and movies for our members.
Key details
For now, this test will only be available to members who have a Standard or Premium subscription. While all three plans allow unlimited access to Netflix’s offerings, the main differences relate to the number of simultaneous screens that can watch movies or series. on Netflixand their quality.
Chengyi Long, in his blog post, adds:
We realize that people have many choices when it comes to entertainment, so we want to make sure new features are flexible and useful for members, whose subscriptions fund all of our great series and movies. We will work to understand how useful these two features are for members in these three countries, before making changes anywhere else in the world.
It is in any case a study which, if it works, will have repercussions on the price of your subscription.
