Regularly, actors from the world of cinema meet at various events. Right now, CinemaCon 2022 is taking place. The opportunity for Sony Pictures to present its current projects, including highly anticipated sequels. We take stock.
Sony Pictures: announcements at CinemaCon 2022
Among the many events dedicated to the film industry, CinemaCon in Las Vegas occupies a special place. And for good reason, it has taken place every year for more than 35 years. Organized since 1975 by the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO), which notably brings together many cinema owners, it notably offers announcements, seminars, as well as preview screenings of films.
The 2022 edition of CinemaCon started this Monday April 25 and will take place until Thursday 28, and Sony has already held its conference. On the program, rather attractive announcements, if not really surprising.
Three long-awaited sequels
So let’s start with the most significant announcements made by Sony Pictures during CinemaCon 2022. First, a saga that will have marked the youth of millions of people in the 80s will be making a comeback. Ghostbusters (Where ghostbustersin VO) will indeed return under the leadership of Sony for a fifth film, which should nevertheless be called Ghostbusters 4. This one will thus make the impasse on the very average ghostbusters women’s of 2016 in response to Ghostbusters: The Legacy (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), released last year and itself a direct sequel to the second installment released in 1989.
Another big announcement, Sony will continue to expand its Spider-Verse and more particularly the animated projects linked to it. After Spider-Man: Next Generation (2018) and even beforeAcross the Spider-Verse (2023) has seen the light of day, Sony Pictures has announced that the sequel to the spider-men animated adventures will be named Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, pending a possible title in French. Take your trouble patiently, since the release date is estimated in March 2024.
Third big announcement that was expected, Venom 3 has been formalized. If you doubted that a sequel would see the light of day because of the terrible reviews of the first two parts, Sony intends to exhaust the formula as long as it can attract spectators in dark rooms and bring in the box office. Can’t really blame them, but we simply hope that the studios will be able to question themselves in order to offer a third, more convincing film. With an increasingly strong connection to the MCU and an actor as good as Tom Hardy in the role of the symbiote, we are entitled to hope.
Other announcements from Sony
So much for the suites of franchises that have already proven themselves. As for other announcements, let’s mention El Muerto, a Spider-Man spin-off aiming to flesh out the Spider-Verse somewhat after Morbus. This unpopular character is a Mexican professional wrestler, whose mask grants him superhuman strength and power. This one will be camped by the rapper Bad Bunny, who has become popular in recent years. Release scheduled for January 2024.
Finally, new images from the thriller Bullet Train have been unveiled. We will find Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock or Aaron Taylor-Johnson, criminals on the same train and discovering that they are linked by a mission. It will be released on July 27, 2022.
