The Rings of Power: The Lord of the Rings series introduces two new characters

After a very first teaser at the beginning of the year, the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continued to unfold. Announcement after announcement, the series was able to give a glimpse of its characters, before officially presenting them. The announcements are multiplying, like these two new characters, unveiled by Amazon this Tuesday, April 19.

presentations that follow one another…

Last February, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power featured three new characters. The first was none other than High King Gil-galad, played by actor Benjamin Walker. High King of the Noldor, he is known to have been the holder of the elven ring Vilya which he bequeathed to Elrond. He was also the leader of the Elven forces in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men that faced Sauron at the end of the Second Age, in which battle he died alongside Elendil. The second is none other than the young Hobbit Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot. It is his voice that is heard in the trailer.

A new character created especially for the series who belongs to the branch of the Pievelus, Hobbits with darker skin and smaller feet. The third and final character introduced last February is billed as “The Stranger.” A mysterious title that has raised several questions about its identity. According to some estimates, it could be Tom Bombadil, the character who helps Frodo escape from the Shire during the Fellowship of the Ring, present in Tolkien’s book, but absent from Peter Jackson’s film.

… and don’t seem ready to stop

And this Tuesday, April 19, 2022, the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power wanted to introduce two new characters: Theo and Bronwyn. Theo is a brand new sword-wielding character seen in one of the posters unveiled earlier this year.

Only, faced with this relatively modern name, some netizens saw it as a new drift from Amazon’s series adaptation.

“Theo”? Seriously? What’s the next character’s name to be revealed? Jack? Billy? That doesn’t fell Tolkien at all

“Theo”? Seriously ? What will be the next character name to be revealed? Jack? Billy? It doesn’t sound like Tolkien at all.

Although Amazon did not share the reasons behind this choice which some will describe as surprising, it is possible that Theo’s name is a nickname, as explained by the twittos @PhilosophGames.

“Theo” could be a nickname.
According to “An Anglo-Saxon Dictionary” by Bosworth and Toller (1898) þeód (theód) means nation, people.

We find this word in some other Old English names Tolkien used like Éothéod (horse people) or Théoden (“the chief of a þeód”, “a prince, king”).

Despite these announcements, a story rings out constantly, that of the proper presentation of Celebrimbor, the famous elf who will be one of the focus of the series. Amazon may wait until the second trailer to keep the suspense. Answer in the next few months.
