The Jawas, people of scrap metal from Tatooine, are very present in the Star Wars saga. Corn series The Mandalorian showed us that the Jawa didn’t just live on this desert planet in the Outer Rim. They are also present throughout the galaxy. The Boba Fett Book strove, for its part, to humanize them. You should know that this species has already been the subject of many stories in the Star Wars universe. For example, in the anthology of forty stories titled Star Wars: From a Certain Point of Viewin which multiple stories are told through multiple viewpoints during A New Hopewe can meet Jot, a Jawa passionate about the stories.
Jot, witness to the most important events in the Galaxy
Indeed, Jot appears in Stories in the Sand by Griffin McElroy. In the course of the story, we discover that the latter was the bearer of many secrets, and certainly the greatest secrets in the galaxy and that they allowed him to seek his own destiny in the stars.
In Stories in the Sand, we discover that Jot managed to create a space in his Char des sables (where only he could go). In his space, he installed his Storyteller, a projector made from salvaged parts to be able to discover the stories he was able to collect from droids and ships. If the community of Jawas in which Jot lives is turned towards the past, its history shows us that this one is about events happening outside of Tatooine. With the memory banks, Jot was able to discover new planets and many cultures. This is also the reason why he aspires to want to live his life outside the Char des Sables.
When the Jawas picked up R2-D2, it was Jot who was supposed to erase the memory of the droid. But he did not do it. He downloaded R2-D2’s memories for his collection and when he viewed them on his holoprojector, he is became the unexpected witness to the galaxy’s best kept secrets. He was able to witness, for example, the wedding of Padmé and Anakin, the deployments of the armies of droids, the massive battles that had raged in the Galaxy, … Although he did not understand what was happening in front of his eyes, due to the language barrier, all these stories inspired him to explore the galaxy.
A key role despite himself
Fortunately, Jot did not erase the memory of R2-D2 who was able to transmit his message and the plans of the Death Star to Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Rebellion. Finally, after this episode, the Jawa decides to leave his community. It had always been his ambition to leave Tatooine. He will do this with a ship from Mos Eisley or Anchorhead.
Sure, Jot’s role in the Star Wars universe seems insignificant, but his story shows us that this Jawa holds the galaxy’s most important secrets and reminds us that even the smallest characters can sometimes turn things around.
