Star Wars: like Marvel, the saga has already used time travel

It’s the last resort for all screenwriters lacking inspiration or looking to create unexpected events: time travel is on the rise. Marvel Studios has understood this and is taking full advantage of it. On his side, Star Wars, yet a pillar of science fiction, has only used it once. We tell you that.

A surprise reserved by star wars rebels

Despite its 45 years of existence, the saga Star Wars still full of secrets. Many fans were disappointed with the latest Disney trilogy, but they could console themselves by looking at the other versions of the universe created by George Lucas. The comics, but also the series indeed make it possible to deepen many characters and elements of the lore. It is even sometimes whole sections that we discover and which have been ignored by the films.

This is particularly the case with the world between worlds, a mystical plane linking different strands of time and history, whose existence we discover in the last season of the animated series star wars rebels. If your memories are now distant or you simply never had the curiosity to look into this one, we summarize it all for you! The series takes place between episodes III and IV of the film saga, as the Empire grows stronger and hunts down the last Jedi. A rebellion forms in the shadows and among its members is the young padawan Ezra Bridger, who discovers the world between worlds on the planet Lothal.

The discovery of the world between worlds

In the last season of star wars rebels, Emperor Darth Sidious has a Jedi temple excavated on the planet Lothal, as he has discovered that it conceals the world between worlds, which allows travel between time and space via portals. Fortunately for the galaxy, it is the padawan Ezra Bridger and his sidekick Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian weapon expert, who first discover the entrance to this mysterious place, hidden behind a mural representing the Gods of Mortis.

While exploring, they discover that behind one of the portals, a duel pits the Sith lord Darth Vader against his former apprentice Ashoka Tano at the temple of Malachor. As the Sith takes over, Ezra manages to pull Ahsoka out of this mess through the portal. This therefore marks a journey through space, but also the first – and so far only – journey through time of Star Wars : the duel between Vader and the Jedi had taken place two years before.

a vein never exploited

Aware of the possibilities offered by such a discovery, Ezra then tries to save his former Jedi master, Kanan Jarrus, who died during a heroic sacrifice. Ahsoka, however, manages to make him change his mind and decides herself to return to her time, aware of the catastrophic consequences that could be caused by an upheaval of space-time.

For screenwriters, this is a particularly daring choice, since they choose not to take advantage of time travel: the temple is destroyed and the world between worlds gone. star wars rebels ends during this fourth season and Disney has not seen fit to set up a sort of multiverse like what Marvel did with its MCU. A desire not to give in to this (too?) famous scriptwriting facility?
