The fans of One Piece are enjoying themselves at the moment, between movie announcements One Piece: Red, and the revelations of the manga. And as such, it seemed interesting to us to to think about the problem caused by the latest revelations of the manga.

The problem about netflix live-action one piece

Warning, the spoiler starts here.

As you probably know, Netflix is currently developing a live-action television series One Piecewith Inaki Godoy as Luffy.

The first four members of the Straw Hat crew have also been cast (namely Zoro, Sanji, Nami and Usopp), and we know that secondary characters such as Buggy or Arlong will also appear, which confirms that the series One Piece by Netflix will be inspired by the first chapters of Eiichiro Oda’s manga. So Season 1 will almost inevitably show how Luffy got his famous powers by eating. his Devil Fruitand the moment he suddenly discovered that his body could stretch like rubber.

Until recently, the biggest challenge of this live-action was to make Luffy’s rubber arms convincing, but Eiichiro Oda’s manga chapter 1044 poses an even bigger hurdle. For 25 years, One Piece maintained that Luffy’s Devil Fruit was the Gomu-Gomu fruit (Gum Gum) paramecia type. Apparently, this was just a story concocted by the world government to hide his real name: the mythical fruit Zoan Hito-Hito, model: Nika. The real reason Luffy’s body becomes expandable is because Nika the Sun God possessed a rubber body, and this feature was apparently the first level he “unlocked”. From that moment, Luffy slowly developed the hidden power of his fruit, until Nika finally manifests during the battle against Kaido..

a revelation that gives food for thought in the context of an adaptation

This game-changing revelation completely reframes Luffy’s origin story, and poses, at the same time, a series problem One Piece by Netflix. If Iñaki Godoy making his debut in episode 1 begins by saying “I ate the Gum-Gum fruit”, the public will say “No it is wrong”. When flashbacks show a panicked Shanks because “Luffy just ate the Gum-Gum fruit”viewers will respond internally “No, still not!”. It’s obvious that the live action One Piece by Netflix isn’t going to reveal the real name of Luffy’s Devil Fruit in Season 1, but now thatEiichiro Oda dropped its bombshell, it might help to subtly announce that all is not as it seems.

We now know that Shanks pirates stole the Gomu-Gomu fruit from a world government ship. Shanks might refer to it and wonder why the Navy was so interested in a fruit that turns the body into rubber, which would subtly indicate that the Gomu-Gomu fruit is more important than Luffy knows. That way the Netflix live-action can be in the dark, rather than (very) late. We can also imagine references to the sun, which would be a nice nod to fans who know the anime well and Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

Moreover, the chances that the live action of One Piece lasts long enough to fit the fight against Kaido and Luffy’s transformation are pretty slim (evidenced by previous live-action anime released on Netflix), so the opportunity to make that revelation a reality may never come again. In any case, the mangaka’s revelation will ask the teams in charge of the live-action to adjust the shooting, so as not to provoke laughing stock.

And if you missed it, you can always find everything the cast of the Netflix live-action supporting characters right here.
