If animated series on superheroes have been legion for decades and several superhero films have marked the cinema industry before the 2010s, it is with the appearance of the MCU from 2008 that the superhero movies have exploded. For 14 years, Marvel has captivated and seduced new viewers with each new film, each new series. And if Michael Bay is not against the idea of joining this great adventure, he nevertheless has a very specific requirement.
Superhero films: an effective genre that must be renewed
If you are passionate about the universe of superheroes but you are not too keen on reading comics, you must be in heaven in recent years. Because for nearly 15 years, The Marvel Cinematic Universe brings these most cult characters back to life, along with some lesser-known ones.
But it is logically the most popular that are the most on screen. Between the four films avengersthe (soon) four Thoror all three Spiderman with Tom Holland (to name but a few), Marvel Studios knows how to bet on beautiful horses, even if it means putting aside originality. An aspect that bothers Michael Bay a lot who, if he is not opposed to directing a superhero film one day, wishes at all costs to renew the genre.
A new franchise of superheroes signed Michael Bay to come?
A few days ago, Michael Bay, who recently and bluntly commented on the incident at the 2022 Oscars, gave an interview to ComicBook.com as part of the promotion of his latest feature film, Ambulance, which is currently receiving fairly mixed reviews.
But getting off topic a bit, he came to talk about the fact thathe never made a superhero movie. A thoughtful choice: the director does not close the door to a project of this kind, but he wants to be able to enjoy immense freedom in his approach.
It’s not that I’m not interested in Marvel. As Ridley Scott puts it, “the most complicated thing and the most fun thing for a director to do is to create a world”. […] I’m not the guy who’s going to go see Lucasfilm and do Star Wars V. That’s not me. I’m not the one who’s going to come and do Iron Man 7. I’m not the one who’s going to do Batman 10. I want to do my own thing. I would love to do a superhero movie but I want to do it on my own terms and create my own world. Michael Bay
You would have understood it, the director behind bad boys and transformers will only agree to embark on the adventure – obviously rather with Marvel – if he is free to do what he wants. And since he refuses to make yet another sequel to other feature films, he could therefore focus on a superhero that we have never seen on screen. Even more ambitious: in view of its desire to create its “own world”, it is not impossible that Michael Bay decides to create his own superhero! Spoiler: this one will probably be a fan of explosions.
