!!! WARNING: this article will spoil some key elements of the Fantastic Beasts 3 !!!

albus dumbledore refuses a prestigious title

Six years after the first part and four after the second, Fantastic Beasts 3 was released on April 13th in our dark rooms. Entitled Dumbledore’s Secretshe continues the story begun in the first two films, whileAlbus Dumbledore tries to mobilize as many forces as possible to thwart the plans of the terrible Grindelwald, now embodied by Mads Mikkelsen, following the legal setbacks of Johnny Depp.

Towards the end of Fantastic Beasts 3, Grindelwald’s plans are about to come to fruition: thanks to clever political manipulations, he is about to be elected leader of the Wizarding World. His plans are ultimately foiled, when Croyance, Queenie and Norbert manage to prove that he manipulated the elections. Finally, the Qilin, this magical creature capable of probing the souls of wizards, bows to Albus Dumbledore in order to designate him as the new leader. If he could have jumped at the chance, the decision of this highly respected creature being binding on wizards, Albus refuses.

This decision caused a lot of talk among the fans, who did not all understand this refusal, downright considered by some as an inconsistency. But this could in fact be explained quite simply by the fact that if the Qilin sees Dumbledore as a good person, the person concerned has never forgiven himself for his past mistakes, from the death of his sister Ariana to his relationship (and related outbursts) with Grindelwald in his youth. Only Albus would have less to blame himself for than he thinks.

A redemption offered by the Qilin to Albus Dumbledore

It would seem that while Dumbledore wasn’t always very well-meaning and was clearly power-hungry in the past, he was also manipulated by Grindelwald from the start of their relationship. This one was indeed obsessed with the Obscurials, wizards and witches whose powers have been repressed following physical or psychological abuse. Albus’ sister, Ariana, as well as his nephew, Croyance, are/were just that. It could therefore be that from the very beginning, Grindelwald manipulated the young wizard and that it was not afterwards that he would have gone wrong. It is in particular for this reason that he would have pushed him to seal the blood pact, making any aggression impossible between one and the other.

It is for this reason that Albus is forced to mount an “army” against Grindelwald, adding new weight to his conscience. It is therefore because he considers himself too bad a person that he refuses to be named leader of the Wizarding World. However, if the Qilin chose him, it is probably because thanks to his ability to read people’s souls, he realized that Albus Dumbledore was not inherently evil. It was therefore a sort of second chance that he wanted to offer her, the opportunity to redeem herself and to work for the common good.

But even if Dumbledore did not take this chance and will never truly forgive himself for his many mistakes, he subsequently largely made up for it by becoming headmaster of Hogwarts and helping to defeat Voldemort…among other things.
