Euromillions draw: The geometry of chance
In Brazilian mathematician Renato Gianella’s studies, “The Geometry of Chance: Lotto Numbers Follow a Predicted Pattern”, he finds that not all combinations of numbers have the same chance of being drawn. That is, certain combinations are more likely to be drawn than others, and it is quite possible to see what these patterns are. It is enormous.
Gianella’s theory posits that winning numbers from previous draws contain discernible patterns that can indicate which combinations of numbers are most likely to be drawn next.
So why isn’t everyone doing this? You need to have some understanding of probability theories and complex math before you can take full advantage of it. Not many of us can do that!
Prediction: Avoid low numbers
University of Sussex Reader Emeritus in Mathematics Dr John Haigh has a slightly different idea, although it is still based on probability.
He claims that if you pick a combination of numbers that totals 200, your chances of winning can increase dramatically. This may sound like a snake oil salesman’s pitch, but there’s actually a logic behind it.
Unlike Renato Gianella, Dr Haigh believes that every combination of numbers is equally likely to be drawn.
He suggests, however, that what people need to do is figure out which combinations of numbers people are more likely to choose, and then choose something completely different.
How does this help you win? Technically it doesn’t, but if your numbers end up being drawn, it helps you win more. Because you picked numbers that most people don’t, chances are you won’t have to split the pot with anyone else.
Dr. Haigh advises against choosing birthday numbers, lucky numbers (which are mostly single digits), and other possible number combinations that most people choose.
He also advises against choosing a row of numbers, such as 1-6, as well as the numbers from the previous week. In other words, pick numbers that don’t form an obvious pattern.
Can machine learning predict the euromillions draw?
With all the rapid advances in machine learning, couldn’t a machine or supercomputer accurately predict the numbers to come in to win the euromillions draw?
Unfortunately, that’s impossible, according to UCLA professor emeritus of statistics Donald Ylvisaker. There is no machine capable of doing this, neither today nor tomorrow.
Lotteries rely heavily on randomness. The random number generators used by lotteries have become increasingly sophisticated over time. Ylvisaker, who monitors lottery draws to ensure fairness, says lotteries use different machines that generate numbers for each draw.
So, because the machines are different every time, it’s too difficult to gather enough usable data to build a device that can predict lotto numbers. The professor also points out that the amount of data required for such an undertaking is quite prohibitive.
To put it simply, you are looking at billions of possible combinations. It is an impossible task.
