This historic Los Angeles movie theater, owned by acclaimed screenwriter and director Quentin Tarantino since 2007, has earned a reputation as one of the last strongholds of 35mm. It’s a place where “real film”, as opposed to the modern proliferation of digitally shot films, lives in the light of projection booths. As such, it’s not a place you usually see a lot of Marvel Studios movies..

The month of May at the New Bev! Join us for a month of terror filled with classics, favorites and 15th birthdays as we celebrate halfway to Halloween.

According to Den of Geekthe film Thor (2011) was the last Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to be shot on 35mm. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness then offers a unique opportunity to directly contemplate a Marvel film made with this traditional method.

This choice on the part of Quentin Tarantino is obviously not trivial, given the great controversies that have torn the film world apart, since the legendary Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola declared that Marvel was not cinema. An informed cinephile, Tarantino takes part in his own way in the discussion. A decision that should delight Marvel Studios and Disney, given that the leaders are increasingly trying to make room for visionary filmmakers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, among them James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), Chloe Zhao (nomadland) or even Sam Raimi.

a new genre for THE MCU?

Some will wonder why Doctor Strange 2 appears alongside these well-known horror films such as Friday the 13th: Final Chapter (194) or candy man (1992). But the movie was originally billed as a horror movie when it was first announced.. Director Scott Derricksonknown in particular for The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and Sinister (2012), was normally to continue the sequel to Doctor Strange, but he eventually left the project due to creative differences with the studio.

Marvel Studios has finally chosen the director of the first trilogy Spiderman and movies evil Dead, Sam Raimi, to make the film. In an interview with Fandangothe filmmaker touched on the horror elements of the upcoming film:

I think what [Kevin] meant, from my point of view, is that this film has a taste of horror. I think when original director Scott Derrickson and Kevin were promoting the start of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, they said it would be the first Marvel superhero movie that would have elements related to the horror. […] But even after Scott left due to creative differences, the mission was still the same: to make the first Marvel movie with horror elements. So I stayed true to their initial statements.

The ambition of Raimi and Marvel Studios so seems to make a movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness the first Marvel movie that is both scary and all audiences. Answer on May 4, 2022when it is released in our French cinemas.
